Valais Alpine Bike

It's our longest project and it's very close to our hearts. From the outset, Bikeplan has been convinced of the potential of mountain biking to develop tourism in the Valais. After several years' work, the first new-generation regional mountain bike route is finally ready in the Valais. Here's the story behind the creation of this route.

Pure pleasure on the singletrails of the Valais. From Crans-Montana to Brig via the Leukerbad region, Moosalp, Grächen and then the Lötschental and Val d’Anniviers valleys, the mountain bike route winds its way through the most beautiful trails in the Valais.

History of the Valais Alpine Bike route

Strategy

The Bike Valais / Wallis project, which was launched in 2015, analysed the state of mountain bike tourism in the canton of Valais and the potential for guests and regions to become mountain bike destinations. Following these studies, a strategy was defined for the canton.

Coordination office

In 2017, the BikeWallis coordination office was set up to provide technical support for the implementation of regional concepts and to develop a cantonal Masterplan. The office is the first point of contact for biking-specific issues and acts as an intermediary between destinations, external service providers, cantonal services and environmental associations. The paths linking the regions are planned by the coordination platform and monitored until they are implemented. Specific marketing and public relations measures are also put in place.

Masterplan

On the basis of surveys of local conditions and developments, analyses of tourism and spatial planning and coordination meetings with the parties concerned, customised concepts are developed for destinations with a specific focus on mountain biking.
Thanks to the participatory approach, the concepts are widely accepted in the destinations, and the 10 master plans developed for these destinations and their networks serve as a basis for the approval of downhill mountain bike trails/tracks in accordance with the LIML.

Planning

Based on the MTB route networks approved following the masterplans and the Canton’s strategic vision, the planning of regional routes will begin in 2019. 3 regional routes are intended to link the whole of the Valais and to serve as the main axis on which local routes will be grafted. These routes, which are part of the 2021 / 2025 mountain bike /road guide, meet the new quality and attractiveness criteria now set out in the federal law on cycle routes.

Routes

  • -

The Valais Alpine Bike route covering the central Valais takes in some of the finest Alpine trails, and will be signposted by Valrando in 2022.
  • -

The Valais Panorama Bike route will cover the upper Valais and its magnificent landscapes. The various stages are currently being finalised.
  • -

Finally, a route whose name we'll have to wait a little longer to find out will cover the Lower Valais, passing through some Alpine passes before finishing with its feet in Lake Geneva. More than 40 communes were consulted about the creation of the stages, and the approval process is under way.

Promotion

To promote the “Valais Alpine Bike” itinerary, Valais/Wallis Promotion has developed holiday packages where mountain bikers can quickly and easily plan their stay, from four to eight days, including accommodation.

SwissMobile is also promoting these new routes, the national soft mobility network for leisure and tourism. Its “Mountainbiking in Switzerland” offer includes a refreshed selection of the most attractive routes in Switzerland.

We would like to thank SETI, Valais Wallis Promotion SuisseMobile and Valrando, without whom this project would not have been possible.

Enjoy the ride!
