Foundation and first concept
Adrian Greiner founds Bikeplan and puts the mountain biking strategy for Zermatt on paper.
Story · 10 years of Bikeplan
We have been developing mountain biking regions since 2014. What began as a concept for Zermatt is now a team supporting destinations in Switzerland, Germany, and beyond.
How it all started
Adrian Greiner founded Bikeplan in fall 2014. As a passionate mountain bike guide, he saw considerable untapped potential for mountain biking in Zermatt and Valais. He developed his first concept, the mountain biking strategy for Zermatt, on his own in a windowless basement office.
The idea soon grew into a team, made possible by many committed and passionate employees, both past and present.
2014 - 2016
Zermatt was our first testing ground. Here, we learned how a strategy becomes a trail on the ground.
Adrian Greiner founds Bikeplan and puts the mountain biking strategy for Zermatt on paper.
An initial team of land use planners, sports scientists, and a scenographic designer begins developing the destination for mountain biking.
Our first flow trail, fully planned by us and built under our guidance, sets new standards for beginner-friendly riding in Switzerland.
Milestone 2016
Today, the Moos-Trail also connects the hamlet of Furi with Zermatt for riders and schoolchildren. The municipality of Zermatt placed its trust in us and integrated the new trail building crew into its municipal maintenance team.
2015 - 2022
Our longest-running project is particularly close to our hearts. From the outset, we believed in mountain biking’s tourism potential in Valais.
With support from RWO and the STRATOS-Netzwerk Oberwallis, the project is launched. A year later, it leads to the canton’s mountain biking strategy.
Within the NRP project Bike Valais/Wallis, we develop master plans for more than ten regions and destinations in Valais through numerous discussions and workshops with tourism, administrative, and political stakeholders.
The first regional mountain bike route of the new generation is complete: 6 stages through diverse natural environments and habitats. Further routes follow in 2024 and 2026.
2018 - 2024
Good trails need specialist expertise and a strong network. That is why our commitment to the industry goes beyond our project work.
In 2018 and 2019, we bring experts from trail construction, the cycling industry, and public administration to Zermatt for exchange and knowledge sharing at the highest level.
Through our IMBA Europe network, we initiate and co-found IMBA Schweiz, helping establish it during its first years.
In the Swiss Mountainbiking Project (Innotour, SECO), we analyze gaps in MTB tourism and trail construction for trail.foundation. In the European DIRTT project, we help develop the foundations for trail building training.
2018 - 2024
In 2018, we plan our first major international project: a cycling and mountain biking master plan for the Lošinj islands in Croatia, including cycling concepts within towns and connections between the islands’ attractions. Further projects follow, including in Scotland and Norway.
We also cross boundaries in Switzerland: with Bike St. Gotthard, we develop a mountain biking labyrinth over the Furka, Nufenen, Lukmanier, and Oberalp passes. Spanning 4 cantons, 3 language regions, 11 municipalities, and 181 km of routes, it is a showcase project for the New Regional Policy.
Since 2021
Today, we support regions with strategies, implementation, and operations, including beyond national borders. Our headquarters have been on Marktgasse in Bern since 2019.
Based on our master plans, we establish coordination offices in both Bernese regions. They work with municipalities and partners to put the plans into action.
Together with Bikeplan GmbH in Germany, we implement large trail systems that benefit tourism.
The cross-border Borderless Trails in Sächsische Schweiz opened in June, followed by the Blauherd Trail in Zermatt in July. Twelve years after our first concept, we are back at the Matterhorn.
Thank you
We thank everyone who has supported us and believed in us: clients, partners, municipalities, the biking community, and our past and present employees. We look forward to many more projects, new connections, and lasting friendships around mountain biking.
