Project description
Mountain biking destination Hochschwarzwald
Starting point
Hochschwarzwald is one of Germany’s best-known vacation regions. At the same time, it faces structural change: traditional winter tourism is losing importance due to climate change, while demand for year-round, nature-based recreation is growing rapidly. The existing mountain biking infrastructure was outdated and no longer met the expectations of modern target audiences.
Our contribution
Bikeplan developed a comprehensive master plan for mountain biking across Hochschwarzwald. At its heart was an integrated assessment of land, use, target audiences, natural conditions, ownership, and economic effects. Working closely with municipalities, tourism organizations, and other stakeholders, we analyzed potential, defined development areas, and prepared specific recommendations for action.
What was created
- A shared vision for Hochschwarzwald as a mountain biking destination
- A regionally coordinated trail network of around 200 km that can be implemented in phases
- Clear development priorities for individual municipalities and areas
- A sound basis for decisions by policymakers, public administrators, and funding bodies
Impact
The master plan strengthens Hochschwarzwald as a year-round destination, channels growing demand for mountain biking offerings, and creates new opportunities for tourism, regional economic value, and quality of life in harmony with nature and the landscape.
