Borderless Trails
Cross-border mountain biking infrastructure with a digital operating concept, from the first plan through ongoing operations.
Borderless Trails
A mountain biking experience without borders
Sebnitz & Neustadt in Sachsen (DE) / Dolní Poustevna (CZ)
Planning | Implementation | Digital
Key questions
How can we create a connected trail offering that works across borders legally, organizationally, and in daily operations?
How can operations, maintenance, and marketing be organized efficiently over the long term?
How can a project like this be built and then professionally operated, communicated, and developed further?
Project description
A cross-border trail system
Starting point
The Sebnitz and Neustadt in Sachsen region lies in the heart of Sächsische Schweiz, with a distinctive landscape, an established tourism industry, and a location directly on the Czech border. Mountain biking was recognized early on as an opportunity to develop active tourism, reach new visitor groups, and improve quality of life for local residents. What makes this project special is its approach: three municipalities in two countries—Sebnitz and Neustadt in Sachsen (DE), along with Dolní Poustevna (CZ)—are jointly developing a destination that transcends borders.
Our contribution
What was created
- A 30 km MTB trail network for all target audiences (partial opening in June 2026 / full completion in October 2026)
- Two welcome centers serving as anchors for the destination
- A certified recreational forest with a wide range of leisure activities, accessible year-round
- A viable operating and organizational concept for safe, efficient, cross-border operations
- A digital ecosystem for trail management, visitor communications, and monitoring
- Clear foundations for transparent marketing and long-term development
Impact
Borderless Trails is more than a trail construction project. It demonstrates what can happen when three municipalities across a national border sit down together and take shared responsibility. Supported by the European Union’s INTERREG program, the project has created an offering that attracts visitors from two countries, opens up new recreational spaces for residents, and strengthens a region that needs precisely this: a clear, confident identity as an outdoor destination. Bikeplan has supported the process from the outset with the knowledge, experience, and network needed to turn an idea into a functioning destination.
