Blauherd Trail, Zermatt
A red-rated flow trail at 2500 meters, set within a high alpine rocky landscape with views of the Matterhorn. From the first site visit in 2018 to opening in 2026.
Starting point
The area between Blauherd and Sunnegga is one of Zermatt’s most visited recreational spaces. This was the location chosen for a red-rated trail: amid an impressive high alpine rocky landscape, with views of the Matterhorn, in a sensitive natural environment. The task was to create a biking experience that showcases the qualities of this landscape while respecting it.
Our contribution
The first site visit took place in 2018, together with the Zermatt trail building crew, an environmental engineer, Pro Natura, and our land use planners. This dialogue produced an alignment that takes the landscape’s specific qualities, flora, and fauna into account. The trail guides riders deliberately through the rocky landscape while managing their movement through this heavily used area. All features can be rolled over, making the trail rideable for families at an intermediate skill level as well.
Result
Since July 11, 2026, the Blauherd Trail has been ready to ride: 2.8 kilometers and just under 300 meters of descent from Blauherd to Sunnegga, with technical natural sections, playful style features, and the ride through the large canyon at its heart. Zermatt Tourismus lists the trail as one of the region’s biking highlights. Sensitive planning has paid off.
