Bike St. Gotthard

11 municipalities, 4 cantons, 3 languages, incredible views, and a total of 181 km of riding fun: this is what cross-regional planning can achieve!

The San Gottardo program (PSG) is a joint project of the cantons of Uri, Graubünden and Ticino and has served as a policy instrument for regional development in the Gotthard area since 2008. Cross-regional mountain biking infrastructure is one of the funding priorities of this tourism project spanning multiple cantons.

In Phase 2 of the Bike St. Gotthard project, Bikeplan took on coordination for implementing a regional SchweizMobil route around the Gotthard. The basis was Allegra’s Mountainbike Synthes 2.0. The regional route was planned primarily along existing trails, some of which required construction work.
Trail assessments were therefore carried out together with Allegra, after which Bikeplan
  • defined the necessary trail measures,
  • clarified the permitting process,
  • investigated co-funding opportunities, and
  • held discussions with the municipalities concerned, regional development specialists, cantonal agencies, and other stakeholders.

On this basis, public review documents for the cantonal permitting processes were then prepared on behalf of the municipalities. Bikeplan also advised municipalities and regions, helping them establish project organizations and determine cost-sharing arrangements, among other matters.

The project has continued with Phase 3 since June 2022. Bikeplan coordinates and assures the quality of implementation, plans the signage, and registers the route with SchweizMobil.

“The St. Gotthard mountain bike routes are a showcase project within Switzerland’s New Regional Policy (NRP).”
