Monitoring: visitor counts and surveys

Counters, surveys, and movement data create a dynamic, comprehensive picture of your trail network.

Before we start measuring, we work with you to clarify your goals: Do you want to understand usage patterns overall, or evaluate a specific measure? Do you need an initial assessment for a preliminary study, or a reliable basis for a funding application? And where do you suspect conflicts between hikers and mountain bikers? Only then do we decide where to measure and for how long.

How monitoring works

Quantity

Counters at your key locations

Modern counters provide hard data at the locations that matter to you: intersections, perimeter boundaries, and sensitive areas.

  • Precise visitor counts by time, day of the week, and season
  • Verifiable data instead of estimates, including for public authorities and funding bodies
  • Set up for the long term to reveal trends, not just snapshots

Quality

Surveys that explain the numbers

Numbers show what happens; surveys explain why. On site or online, we ask users about their needs, conflicts, and expectations for your trail network.

  • Understand users’ motivations and origins, not just their numbers
  • Let users identify points of conflict between hikers and mountain bikers directly
  • Integrated into the fieldwork through information boards, flyers, or social media

Movement patterns

A view of the whole network, not just one point

A counting station shows who passes by, but not where they go next. Where visitors use your own Mountainbike United app, their anonymized movement data adds a view of the entire trail network, rather than just individual counting locations.

  • Movement patterns across the entire trail network, not just at individual points
  • Directly from your own digital ecosystem, rather than a separate third-party app
  • Can be linked to the TMP for upcoming maintenance or expansion planning

Trailpulse

Your visitor count data live, not just in the annual report

The Trailpulse widget displays aggregated counts from one or more counting stations live, with selectable intervals (15 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 month, 1 year), including a time-series chart. Unlike a final report alone, the figures remain visible to you at any time (and to your visitors too, if you wish).

“For us in the Schladming-Dachstein region, understanding our visitors’ cycling behavior better is a key priority, so that we can use these insights to develop our offerings in a targeted way.”

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions from municipalities, destinations, and operating organizations

Isn’t a single counting station enough?

One point does not show the entire networkA counting station shows exactly how many people pass that location, but not where they go afterward or which route they choose next. That is why we combine counters with surveys and, where possible, movement data from the Mountainbike United app.

How do you combine counting data with surveys?

Two data sources, one pictureAlongside the counts, we conduct a project-specific survey if needed, promoted through information boards in the field, flyers, or social media. This brings objective data together with users’ perspectives.

What can we use the data for in practice?

From maintenance planning to funding applicationsAs a data source for planning maintenance of your trail network in the TMP, assessing coexistence between hikers and mountain bikers, reviewing visitor management measures and signage, and providing reliable figures for investment decisions or funding applications.

Next step

Monitoring starts with a clear question.

Together, we clarify which question you want to answer and where a counting station will provide the most useful information.
