Project Description

Bike St. Gotthard

Client Support, Stakeholder Management, Development of Planning Foundations, Implementation Coordination, Support for Regions in Establishing Project Ownership and Defining Cost Allocation, Quality Assurance, and Monitoring of the Regional Route.
11 municipalities, 4 cantons, 3 languages, incredible views and a total of 181 kilometres of riding fun – this is what supra-regional planning can look like!

The San Gottardo Program (PSG) is a joint initiative of the cantons of Uri, Graubünden, and Ticino and has served as a political instrument for regional development in the Gotthard area since 2008.

One of the key focus areas of this inter-cantonal tourism project is the development of a cross-regional mountain bike infrastructure.

n Phase 2 of the Bike St. Gotthard project, Bikeplan took on the coordination for the implementation of a regional SchweizMobil route around the Gotthard.

The foundation for this was the Mountainbike Synthesis 2.0 by Allegra. The regional route was primarily planned along existing trails, some of which required structural modifications.

Thus, in collaboration with Allegra, trail assessments were conducted, followed by Bikeplan taking the lead in:

– Defining the necessary trail modifications,

– Clarifying the approval process,

– Securing co-financing, and

– Engaging in discussions with affected municipalities, regional developers, cantonal authorities, and other stakeholders.

On behalf of the municipalities, a submission dossier was then prepared for the cantonal approval processes based on these findings.

Additionally, Bikeplan provided advisory support to municipalities and regions, assisting them in establishing project ownership structures and determining cost allocation.

The project has been continued with Phase 3 since June 2022.

In this phase, Bikeplan is responsible for the coordination and quality assurance of the implementation measures, as well as for the signage planning and the official registration of the route with SchweizMobil.

The St. Gotthard Bike Routes are a flagship project within the framework of the Swiss New Regional Policy (NRP).

With the support of the federal government and the four Gotthard cantons, an inter-cantonal tourism project was initiated and implemented, spanning four cantons, four cultural regions, and three language zones.
